This year we were lucky enough to help the teachers and parents at St Mary’s Catholic School in Hornchurch give there school playground a makeover. It was a fantastic experience that we were happy to get involved with. Here is the report from a local newspaper:
After a budget cut left St Mary’s Catholic Primary School, Hornchurch Road, Hornchurch, with little chance of affording some much-needed repair work, the search was on for an alternative solution. Around 15 parents and grandparents responded and a work committee was formed made up of carpenters, painters, electricians and builders, including teachers.
The long summer holiday saw many helpers working early mornings and late nights to make sure the work was completed in time, and the school now has a play area roughly four times larger than before. Other improvements include a new prayer garden, including a beautiful mural, pictured above; new wooden fencing installed throughout, a quiet area for children, and a stunning new and extended outdoor learning environment for Reception and Year 1 children.
The Catholic school also received a new lick of paint both inside and outside and headteacher David Leech is overjoyed by the results.
He said: “I was delighted to welcome the children and staff back to a very different school last week. “The monumental effort that has taken place over the summer holiday has left me truly gobsmacked!”
And he isn’t the only one impressed by the renovation. He said: “We have already had two borough inspectors visit the school and they both commented that no other school in the borough has an outdoor area comparable to ours. They were amazed that this project was carried out by volunteers in its entirety, largely due to the quality of the works. Thank you to everyone that helped make it happen.”
